CINCINNATI , Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that defenseman David MacDonald and forward Alex Bourret have agreed to terms with the club for the 2012-13 season.
MacDonald, a 26-year-old Baddeck, Nova Scotia native, returns for a second consecutive season with the Cyclones. Added to the roster on March 7, 2012, he appeared in 14 games during the 2011-12 campaign and contributed three points (1 goal, 2 assists) and 13 penalty minutes. The five-foot-eleven-inch defenseman played one season at Dalhousie University where he was named Team Captain and accumulated 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists) and 49 penalty minutes in 27 games. MacDonald also spent four years playing for St Mary’s University where he totaled 65 points (10 goals, 55 assists). He played for a trio of teams in the QMJHL for three seasons before he began his collegiate career.
“Right from the get-go David impressed us with his intensity,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. “He plays with an edge but is also committed to playing solid defense. We’re really excited to have him back and watch his development in his first full year.”
Bourret (BUHR-ray), a 25-year-old Drummondville, Quebec native was selected as the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers. The five-foot-ten-inch, 205 pound forward played the majority of the 2011-12 season for the Wichita Thunder (CHL) where he added 57 points (20 goals, 37 assists) and led the team with 168 penalty minutes. While with the Thunder, Bourret was teammates with former Cyclone Thomas Beauregard and new Cyclones defenseman Justin Sawyer. He also logged six games for the Worchester Sharks (AHL) a year ago. In 2010-11, Bourret saw action in 42 games for the Ontario Reign where he contributed 37 points (12 goals, 25 assists) before leaving to play overseas in Asia. His first three seasons of professional hockey were all played at the AHL level; he appeared with the Chicago Wolves, Hartford Wolf Pack, and San Antonio Rampage. During those three seasons Bourret amassed 97 points (28 goals, 69 assists) and 180 penalty minutes. Prior to going pro, he played four years of hockey in the QMJHL.
“Alex is a guy who will be a great weapon for us,” said Skalde. “Any time you can add a player of his pedigree and experience to your lineup, it is going to be beneficial. I am confident he will be one of our stronger offensive players this season.”
