A major step toward the division crown...
March 9, 2013 | View Comments
The Cyclones earned a HUGE victory over the Toledo Walleye last night and took one more major step to the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
In a typical defensive battle, the Cyclones broke a scoreless deadlock early in the second period when Mathieu Aubin potted his 14th goal of the season to give his team a 1-0 lead.
As we expected, the Walleye kept the pressure on and had some tremendous chances to tie the game...but Michael Houser came up big. He also had some help from the posts a couple of times...but we'll take it!
And thanks to some more great defense in the third, the Clones were able to seal the victory as Mike Pelech got a turnover and hit the empty net.
As if that wasn't good enough, Josh Birkholz outskated a Toledo defender and notched another empty-net strike to cap a 3-0 win.
Heading into Saturday night, the magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to 3. With a Cincy win tonight AND a Wheeling AND Kalamazoo loss, the Clones are officially in!
